The Power of Praise

Finally a post from me after long hiatus.

Just a little experience to share.

I do not usually have a habit of praising my students with bombastic words, I only use “good!” or ”very good!”.

last Friday during class, one of my students amazed me with his retention & application of one of my newly taught skills. I totally didnt expect he could get it on his own at first attempt. Therefore I thought he deserved something better.

I said, “this, was really fantastic!”

Although the student didnt immediately manifest any outward signs of estacy, I could feel him beaming slightly from the inside, & it continued to beam for the rest of the lesson.

As parents and educators, we tend to typically only comment on negative behaviors, especially when we feel that it should stop immediately. For example, “Stop climbing on the furniture!”, “Keep quiet & concentrate on your work!”, “Why are you so naughty/lazy/talkative???!”

For me, I think I will start to reward and reinforce positive attitudes and behaviors more often, so that these behaviors will continue. For instance, treat the class the ice-cream if they have been totally focused & goal-driven throughout the lesson!

How to use descriptive praise effectively

  • Praise specifically & descriptively
  • Give appropriate praise
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm!
  • Avoid giving praise and negative comments simultaneously
