Mojo in my life

One of the activity that I truly enjoy is reading and being a self-help freak, my liking tends to be in line with themes on self-development. Recently, I found myself moving away from individually based books to a broader, organizationally based books. I am very much inspired by Tony Hsieh and had picked up some books recommended by him. One of which is Peak.

Am still digesting the first chapter of the book and it’s been interesting so far to learn more on a theory that I had been exposed to when I was in Uni – The Maslow’s Theory on Hierarchy of Needs.

Now, Maslow believed that each of us has basic physiological needs (like sleep, water, food and shelter) and suggested that we focus in the direction of fulfilling our lowest unmet need at the time. As those needs become fulfilled (or partially satisfied), we move up the pyramid to higher needs for physical safety, social connection and esteem. At the very top, is self-actualization.

What striked me is that I had always thought of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to be a theory on self. The book had thus far guided me to see this from a wider perspective – ie if one aspires to self-actualization, an organisation (basically, a collection of people) must also aspires to be actualised, no? And what does a self-actualised organisation looks like? How does it feel to be in one?

“You chose the path of self-actualization. This is what you’re supposed to be doing. And based upon your relationships with your staff, it looks like you’re creating self-actualization foe the people around you, too.” – Peak

Somehow, this passage resonated in me and I feel that Advo is a place for exactly so! Will read on and share more in time to come!
