Making a Difference

Probably a few of my colleagues might know that I’ve been giving free coaching to a Secondary 5 boy for the past 1 month. I met him through…

VIWAWA.COM.

Yes, that infamous virtual mahjong game called WAHJONG. Which totally absorbed Elsie(me) into a whole new world of the un-cute naked characters, in which you have to win some games to buy your “WAWA” some nice clothes and accessories to look “presentable” with the virtual golds. (let’s not get carried away.)

YH* came from a very poor family in Woodlands, he grew up unhealthily with gambling, cigarettes and even gang fights. He enjoys gloating to me his “achievements” in his arena and his “fame” for staying in secondary school for 7 years. He even shared with me how his “gang” managed to defeat their “sworn enemy” by ripping his cheeks and puncturing his lungs.

You must be wondering WHAT IN THE WORLD POSSESSED ME TO TAKE UP SUCH A HIGH RISK, on meeting him the first time we played Wahjong together. “Elsie, you Siao ah?!”. Oh my god, I even plead for my colleagues to stay and comfort me the hour I was about to meet him…

Well, the reason was simple. He’s only 2 years younger than me. Probably about 10-12 MRT stations away from me and we live under the same sky. I was really curious about his “unusual” life, highlights and hobbies. And the fact that he asked me HOW TO GET INTO A LOCAL U AND HOW MUCH.

This guy actually WANTS a change in himself. But his circumstance and environment wouldn’t let him. I thought to myself, what if…

I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE? It was the SUPER CONSCIOUS mind that screamed into my head, “OI! THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAVE A LIFE! GET IT!”. It sounds ridiculous but it was extremely real. I don’t fancy popularity and fame, I sincerely just wanted to help.

The first 2 lessons I had with him was abit challenging. But I managed to overcome the communication barrier and even manage to get him open up. He was actually very grateful that I’m willing to take time out for him and he really did his best for his test.

The first test after our first lesson, he told me he failed still, but with better marks, 6/20.

The next test he score 14/20.

Yesterday, he called me up and screamed at me. He scored a shocking 12/15. That’s a freaking 80%! an A1!

We were both so excited and talked as though the phone bills are FOC. He thanked me continuously and he really made my day. He told me that I was the first person who trusted him so much and gave him so much strength, encouragement and recognition.  That’s an awesome feeling to have! Making a difference. (:

I may not be a superhero or one of the PPG(PowerPuffGirls) to save the world, but I will do all it takes to provide help here and there just to make a difference, and to touch lives (:
