“I don’t know…”

Recently a number of students got back their results, there is one that who didn’t do as well as she expected, I asked her why & she replied “I don’t know”… That night I was thinking about how to help these students & what are their challenges… then I started to think about those students who did well in studies & whenever after an exam, what were their response likes. Interestingly, I found that those who excel would reply like “I am not careful”, “this part I made a mistake”, “I am not sure what the question required” etc etc… they would think through & review their own papers first before they show me the papers & of course we would look through the papers together to understand the reason of marks lost. Similarly, I found that those who are not doing well in general has a common response too. They will just say “I don’t know”. This brought to my attention that this is precisely the challenge, can you imagine yourself taking a test, and after you get back the paper, and do not know why marks are lost? Forgot concepts/strategies? Not careful? Panic? There must be a reason why marks are lost instead of just “I don’t know”. As such, I urge all students to really give serious thoughts to their review after they get back the papers. You know why? This translates to your attitude towards life, especially in the future. Whatever we do, we should always reflect & the ‘worse’ answer you can give to yourself is “I don’t know”…
