Today I arrived at the office first so I decided it was my turn to feed the koi fish.

As I shook some food into the water, I was frustrated to see that the 3 smaller fish were swimming away from me, maybe because they were scared. Only the biggest, fattest fish was swimming towards me.

Even when the smaller fishes realised that I was feeding them food and not a predator, they “snatched” the food from the surface and quickly swam away. Only the fattest fish stayed at the surface, happily eating the bulk of the food.

No wonder the biggest fish is so big. While the other fishes are fearful, the biggest one is greedy enough to overcome its fear of me, and gain the most reward in the form of food. In other words, those who play it safe will lose out to those who are more daring.

The fish have nothing to lose, and everything to gain, because they are pet fish. If they were wild fish, it would be advisable not to just eat anything that appears, in case it’s bait and they get hooked on a fishing line. But when there is nothing to lose, why not just “pia”? Why not give it your all, without holding back?
