“… Because if you generate the culture where nobody wants to make mistakes and they are afraid to do something for fear of making mistakes – that, as Dr Goh Keng Swee used to say – would be the biggest mistake of all.”
The above is a quote from our PM Lee of Singapore.
I could not agree more with what he said. In fact this has been what we have been advocating. It is true that because we all love our children, we want to make sure that they are protected from mistakes and even failure. Yet we must all understand that we are built to make mistakes, and through making mistakes, we learn and become better.
Yet please understand that I am not advocating to the extreme that you must take drugs to know that drugs are bad. I am just saying that it is more important for us to set a culture that encourages learning from mistakes rather than doing nothing at all for fear of mistakes. Only a culture of learning from mistakes can help our children adopt pro-active learning and entrepreneurship, which are the most important skills to succeed in the 21st Century.
