Open your mouth to ask!

I remember once as a child, I got scolded by my mother because I stood there mutely waiting for her to pass me something, instead of just opening my mouth to ask for it. Maybe I was sending her telepathic messages. But anyway, recently I have learned the value of opening one’s mouth to ask.

I went property hunting and because it’s my first time in the HDB rental market, a lot of things were not done properly and I was not able to secure the deal. I didn’t even know that things were going wrong because I left it all to one person to take care of, and this person didn’t do the job properly. If I had asked around the office, I could have saved myself all this trouble and headaches. Urgh!

So the moral of the story is, don’t try to be a hero and go it alone when others are willing to share their experience and expertise with you! This is something I see in some of my students as well. They would rather spend 30 minutes struggling with a question than admit defeat and ask for help. While I respect your desire to accomplish it on your own, as the U2 song goes – sometimes you can’t make it on your own. And we are here to help, so ask for help!
