Dear parents:

Whose fault is it?

Dear students:

Are you overwhelmed by the amount of information you are expected to know? Are the equations and formulae tormenting you? Is this situation causing you anxiety, especially as exams loom nearer? Are you starting to doubt yourself and your abilities?

Again, whose fault is it?

It is not your fault. It is not your parents’ fault. It is not your teachers’ or your school’s fault. No one is at fault. This is an irrelevant question.

The relevant question is: Who can change this situation?

Only the one sitting for the examination has the power and the responsibility to change this situation.

That is, the student.

So where would an academic coach come in? After all, if the student is responsible for changing his/her own situation, there should be no need for a coach, right? Let’s take Tiger Woods as an example.

Tiger Woods has a coach. It is up to him to swing the club, hit the ball and win the trophies, so what is his coach for? His coach provides an external viewpoint. His coach can see the mistakes that Tiger himself may not see because he has grown used to them. His coach has the experience to guide him to victory. And finally, his coach provides motivation and encouragement.

 Who am I?

My name is Pey Kong, and I am a Top Trainer in Chemistry. I aced my Chemistry in top secondary school and junior college, and I graduated from the National University of Singapore with an Honours degree.

Why do I refer to myself as an academic coach, and not a tuition teacher? Simply because I am NOT a tuition teacher. I am not interested in repeating the things that students already hear in school from their school teachers. My coaching strategies are markedly different from those used in school. Furthermore, my coaching philosophy extends beyond academics. I want to see the growth in not only my students’ grades, but also in their personal development.

That is my role as an academic coach. I believe that every one of my students is capable of achieving fantastic results, both in academics and in life. Therefore, my task is to unlock this ability and guide them to success.

 How will I do this?

My system of coaching presents information in a concise manner, so that students will not feel overwhelmed. Furthermore, the link between the information and the strategies they need to solve exam questions will be made clear. With practice, it will become second nature for the students to call up the relevant strategy when faced with a certain question.

Does this sound too good to be true?

What I am offering is not a quickie solution. It is not something that will work overnight, with minimum effort. To succeed, I require two things: commitment and discipline.

Commitment is necessary because I do not allow my students to simply give up when faced with obstacles. If they cannot overcome it alone, I will guide them and we will find a way together.

Discipline is necessary because it builds a strong work ethic. My system is based on the willingness of the student to work. Without discipline, coaching will only be a waste of time. However, do not be alarmed that I will work my students to the bone, non-stop! A strong work ethic simply means being fully focused on work when it is time to work. I also believe in taking breaks and rejuvenating the mind, to build a happy and enjoyable atmosphere during coaching.
